HEALTH & SAFETY
PEANUT AWARE CAMP
Please do NOT bring food items with you as they attract raccoons and other wildlife to the site and your tent. Bush Camp is an allergen-aware camp and we do NOT allow products containing nuts/traces of nuts due to the severe allergies of some of our campers. The Zoo itself is not a nut or peanut-free environment as there are nuts in some of the food that is sold here as well as in the diets prepared for the animals.
MEDICATION
Please indicate on your registration form any medication that you will be taking while at Bush Camp. Please ensure that the medication is labelled with your name if you need to keep it refrigerated (a refrigerator is available at Bush Camp). All medications should be in their original containers when they are brought to Bush Camp. Bush Camp Guides do not administer any medication to campers. In the event of a medical emergency there is a registered nurse available at the Toronto Zoo during operating hours and a Health & Safety Officer on-duty overnight.
EPI-PENS/PUFFERS/INHALERS
Children who have been prescribed an epi-pen, puffer, or inhaler for severe allergies, MUST bring and carry it with them while at camp. Please ensure that the date on the epi-pen, puffer, or inhaler is still valid. Parents/guardians/group leaders are responsible for ensuring that the above items are brought with participants, as applicable.
MEDICAL ASSISTANCE
Toronto Zoo Health & Safety Staff are trained and certified in First Aid and CPR. As well, there is a nurse on-site during Zoo operating hours. If you are sick at camp, we will do everything we can to attend to your well-being.
Smoking
We are entirely smoke and vaporizer free!
Toronto Zoo is committed to practicing and promoting activities and actions that benefit wildlife and the environment, and supporting the health and safety of our guests, staff and the community.
The Toronto Zoo became a smoke-free property for our guests on May 1, 2019. This designation refers to the elimination of the use of tobacco products and smoking such as cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, mini-cigars, pipes, water pipes, hookah, shisha, and cannabis. It also includes the use of electronic smoking devices which create an aerosol or vapor, in any manner or in any form, or the use of any oral smoking device.
BEHAVIOURAL POLICIES
We welcome all campers and make every effort to include and support individual campers with special needs. Campers who persist in behaviour that is dangerous to themselves, staff, and/or other campers, or adversely affects the quality of the camp program will be requested to leave the program and/or the Toronto Zoo. All behavioural situations that arise will be assessed on an individual basis.
SUPERVISION
All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult (age 19+) who is considered the guardian of that child or group of children. If a group of 20 participants or more is coming to Camp, it is recommended that a minimum ratio of 1 adult for every 10 children be observed.
SEVERE WEATHER
If severe weather should occur during your stay, your Bush Camp Guides will adjust schedules and make appropriate arrangements to ensure the comfort and safety of all participants. If the weather is considered unsafe due to forces such as lightning, extremely heavy rains or winds, Health & Safety staff will decide if the Bush Camp evening will be cancelled.
In the event that the Toronto Zoo cancels the program due to extreme weather, a full refund will be given to all registered participants.
