Your Toronto Zoo is proud to be recognized as one of Canada's Greenest Employers Award winners for 2026, marking our 6th consecutive year receiving this national honour. This recognition reflects our commitment to advancing sustainability across every aspect of our operations, from achieving net zero targets and reducing waste, to protecting biodiversity and engaging our community. This is outlined in our 2025-2027 Strategic Plan which states as Guardians of Wild, by 2034 we will become a net-zero organization, actively fighting climate change.
From advancing our TZNet0 Environmental Sustainability Plan and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, to expanding waste diversion programs and restoring natural habitats across our site, our teams are working every day to create measurable impact. This award recognizes the passion and dedication of our staff, the strength of our partnerships, and the collective effort required to drive meaningful environmental change.
Key areas of progress include:
- Campus-wide decarbonization and electrification
- Advanced waste diversion and circular economy programs
- Water conservation and ecosystem restoration initiatives
- Integration of sustainability into governance, procurement, and operations
Thank you to everyone who continues to support our mission to connect people, animals, conservation science, and traditional knowledge to fight extinction. Together, we are creating a future where people, wildlife, and wild spaces thrive.
Now in its 19th year, Canada’s Greenest Employers is an editorial competition that recognizes employers that foster a culture of environmental awareness and leadership. Employers are chosen by editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers using four main criteria: (1) the uniqueness and effectiveness of their environmental initiatives; (2) whether they have been successful in reducing their own environmental footprint; (3) whether their employees are involved in these programs and contribute unique skills; and (4) whether their environmental initiatives have become linked to the employer’s public identity, attracting new employees or customers.
More detailed reasons for selection, explaining why each of the winners was chosen, are published on the competition’s website, Canada's Greenest Employers.
