Booties and Bandages

Vishnu, the 22-year-old greater one-horned male rhinoceros, has been receiving dedicated care from your Toronto Zoo team to support his foot health. In January 2024, a new treatment plan was introduced, using special creams and bandages to provide extra care and comfort. Later in the year, soft carpeting was added in high-traffic areas to create a gentler surface for Vishnu, reducing pressure on his feet. His behind-the-scenes habitat was also enhanced with wood chips for additional cushioning.

By summer, a new topical treatment was introduced. With the trust he has built with his #GuardiansOfWild care team, Vishnu willingly participated in his treatments, allowing a specialized powder to be applied to support his healing. This was secured with a protective bandage, creating custom rhino “booties.”

Thanks to these ongoing efforts, Vishnu is showing great progress! His mobility has improved, and he is spending much more time walking and standing comfortably. His skin has also healed significantly, and he has started engaging in playful behaviours once again—showing signs of renewed confidence and well-being.

While there is still work to be done to fully support Vishnu’s recovery, we are incredibly proud of how far he has come. His journey is a testament to the dedication of his care team and the power of compassionate wildlife care.
