COMMUNITY CHOICE AWARD
NOMINEE
After Sakura, the elderly female red panda, showed signs of health concerns, your Wildlife Care team began supplemental feeding of her two cubs, Biggie and Smalls—nicknamed for their sizes.
Unfortunately, Smalls struggled to thrive and passed away. Not long after, Sakura passed away overnight, leaving behind her two-month-old cub, Biggie.
With Sakura’s passing, her Guardians stepped in to provide full nutrition for Biggie, fully aware of the high mortality rate during the first year of a red panda’s life.
Wildlife Care dedicated their full attention and energy to ensuring that Biggie—now officially named Poppy—received the care and support she needed. After a brief period of weight loss, Poppy quickly began gaining weight on formula.
Feeding started at four times a day, along with regular weight and temperature checks. Socialization was also prioritized, and she was eventually introduced to an older red panda, Kalden.
At six months old, Poppy is defying the odds and thriving. She is nearly fully weaned, enjoying bamboo and leaf-eater biscuits, and is making the most of her exhibit by climbing trees and exploring her surroundings.
Poppy has developed a close bond with Kalden, and they are frequently seen enjoying each other’s company.
