On Saturday, February 7, 2026, your Toronto Zoo is joining the international celebration of efforts to Reverse the Red for at risk species, and sharing our contributions to conserving Canadian species!
This year, for Reverse the Red Day, we are proud to announce that we are making an official Species Pledge to Reverse the Red for the critically endangered Vancouver Island marmot.
Working with our key partners, the Marmot Recovery Foundation and the Wilder Institute, marmot populations have grown from as few as 22 individuals to approximately 427 in the wild, now inhabiting numerous mountains across Vancouver Island. This progress is remarkable, but there is still much work to be done to secure the species’ long-term recovery.
Many of the species we’re helping, including the Vancouver Island marmot, are currently hibernating their way through the cold Canadian winter, but our conservation efforts never sleep! Join us for a hibernation party to learn more about our work to save the marmot, and other Canadian species at risk.
Reverse the Red is a global movement dedicated to preventing species extinction and protecting biodiversity. This initiative unites conservation organizations, governments, and communities worldwide to take action for threatened species and ecosystems. Your Toronto Zoo proudly collaborates with Reverse the Red, and has made Species Pledges for other Canadian species, including bats and Blanding’s turtles.
While the marmots, bats, and Blanding’s turtles* sleep, we invite you to come out and learn more about them! Stop by the Special Events Centre for a fun hibernation party including free hot chocolate, crafting, learnings about these species, and the importance of Reversing the Red on the IUCN’s Red List.
*Blanding’s turtles in the wild are hibernating, but you can still visit Toronto Zoo headstart turtles in the Americas Pavilion!
Your Toronto Zoo’s conservation efforts to Reverse the Red are proudly supported by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization.
