Wood Frog

Lithobates sylvatica
  • Tadpole length 30-40mm, max. 48mm; eyes dorsal
  • Body dark brown to black and oval, with fine gold speckling
  • Tail musculature same colour as body; tail fin transparent with scattered light and dark spots, high arch and continues to mid-body
  • Intestinal coil visible; vent dextral; tooth rows 3/4, 3/3 in northern Ontario
  • Eggs: 500-3000+ laid in firm round or oval mass, anchored to vegetation near or at the surface of shallow ponds; eggs of several females laid together in groups
  • Habitat: ponds and vernal pools in or near woodlands
