Pickerel Frog

Lithobates palustris
  • Tadpole length 50-77mm; eyes dorsal
  • Body grey-brown with a cream or lightly freckled belly; light line may be visible on lip
  • Tail musculature same colour as body with darker spots; tail fin transparent, speckled with small, light spots, sometimes heavily pigmented
  • Intestinal coil may be visible; vent dextral; tooth rows: 2/3
  • Eggs: 800-3000 in globular clusters anchored to submerged vegetation a short distance (<10cm) underwater; may be brownish, in contrast to black eggs of R. pipiens
  • Habitat: ponds, lakes, slow moving streams or springs
