- Darker brown than eastern newt; lateral line of intermittent light spots and black speckling; dark brown stripe with flecks extends from snout through eye; tapered snout
- Tail same colour as body, fin transparent; dorsal tail fin does not extend onto body
- Life history, egg deposition, and habitat characteristics similar to N. v. viridescens
