new at the Zoo New baby Blandings turtles We are happy to announce that four clutches of Blandings turtle eggs hatched successfully over the August long weekend. These baby Blandings are our new recruits for the Toronto Zoos Adopt-A-Pond Wetland Conservation Programme head start initiative. Currently these little guys are all enjoying a tepid nursery tub full of leafy vegetation to hide under and a nice warm basking site nearby. Once they are big enough to more easily evade predators they will be released into wetlands of the Rouge National Urban Park. This long term reintroduction project is the rst of its kind in the Greater Toronto Area and marks a signicant step in 15 years of turtle monitoring and research in what will soon become Rouge National Urban Park. Theres a new giraffe in town On May 29th the Toronto Zoo welcomed a new member to our giraffe family a male Masai giraffe named Kiko from Greenville Zoo in South Carolina. Born October 22 2012 Kiko is almost three years old being very close in age to our young calf Mstari. The Toronto Zoo participates in the Species Survival Plan SSP to ensure we have a healthy self-sustained population of animals that are genetically diverse. Kiko and Mstari will be introduced so they can get to know each other before they hit maturity around ve years of age in hopes that we will have some new baby giraffes added to our Zoo family. Kiko is still under his quarantine process but be sure to give him a warm welcome when you see him in the giraffe habitat in the African Savanna. Centered around a dynamic ever-changing watering hole the experience allows you to meet a diverse range of animals from Africa to the Arctic as they graze drink and interact with the environment around them. This experience made its worldwide debut at the Toronto Zoo this summer.
