A message to all active Zoo Members prior to the May 11th, 2017, Zoo closure.
We are pleased to announce the Toronto Zoo Board of Management and CUPE Local 1600 union employees reached a settlement, which has been ratified by both parties on Monday June 12th.
We fully recognize the inconvenience the Zoo closure was to your membership and enjoyment of the Zoo. To make it right for the 35 lost days during this period, all active members at the onset of the labour disruption will receive all lost days as a result of the Zoo closure PLUS an additional 25 days added as an extension to their membership. For example, if your Membership expired on June 30, 2017, your revised expiration date would be August 29, 2017. If your membership expired during the Zoo closure or shortly after the Zoo re-opens to the public, please stop by Membership Office to have your membership card(s) replaced with the updated expiration date – courtesy of the Membership Team. For all other members, over the course of your many visits to the Zoo, please ensure to have your membership card(s) replaced prior to expiration as printed on your card.
If you attempted to renew early to avail of the early renewal discounts during the Zoo closure, fear not – you have not lost the opportunity for the early renewal discount. With the extended expiration date of your membership, the early renewal discount options are still available for your benefit – online or in person. If you have any questions, please speak with any of our Member Services staff for assistance.
We would like to thank you for your patience and understanding during these difficult times. We want to reassure you, and we are extremely pleased that during the Zoo closure, all exempt staff working under the supervision of highly qualified Wildlife Care experts, veterinarians and curators with many years of experience, took on the responsibility for the care and welfare of our animal population. You can be assured that the animals received excellent care.
Please note, as a result of the labour disruption, some areas may not be operational immediately as staff set up the interactive elements and undergo full safety inspections. Please look for information signs at the front entrance and on our website. The opening of the Animal Shows, scheduled to operate on weekends, will be delayed to complete orientation and training for both staff and our outreach animals. In the interim, a meet and greet opportunity with the animals and a peek of the animal training session will be made available. Member-exclusive early giant panda viewing is available from 8:30 am to 9:00 am, weekends only.
Please continue to enjoy your membership to the Zoo. Thank you for your unwavering support of the Toronto Zoo and the ongoing and critical work we do in the areas of scientific research, education and animal preservation.
