YOUR TORONTO ZOO & GIANT TIGER ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP IN SUPPORT OF ENDANGERED AMUR TIGER CONSERVATION

TORONTO, ON, Friday, July 16, 2021: Your Toronto Zoo and Giant Tiger are excited to announce a new partnership in support of endangered Amur tiger conservation. The Amur tiger is under increasing pressure due to habitat loss and illegal hunting, and this important new partnership will allow us to educate the public on their plight in the wild and do everything we can to mitigate the threats they face and halt declining populations. Together we can make a positive difference. A portion of proceeds from this new partnership will support crucial wildlife conservation work.

“We are so grateful that Giant Tiger has joined your Toronto Zoo in our important mission connecting people, animals and conservation science to fight extinction,” said Dolf DeJong, CEO, your Toronto Zoo. “Partnerships such as these are crucial to successfully connecting your Zoo to the community and supporting critical research and conservation science activities to protect these incredible animals both in our care and in the wild,” he added.

"We are thrilled to partner with the Toronto Zoo and excited to share in the events of welcoming their new Amur Tiger cub to the world!,” said Cindy-Lynn Steele, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Strategy.  “As one of Canada's most beloved brands, Giant Tiger is dedicated to meeting the needs of the communities we serve and celebrating the joys that unite people, which makes this partnership with the Toronto Zoo so rewarding for everyone involved, tigers included! By educating Canadians on the wonders of wildlife and supporting conservation programs, the Toronto Zoo is making a tangible and lasting difference not just in their community but across the globe. We are so proud to be a small part of this giant celebration,” she added.

In 2007, the conservation status of Amur tigers was downgraded from Critically Endangered to Endangered by the International Union for Conservation and Nature (IUCN). Fewer than 500 Amur tigers can be found in the wild, slowly recovering from a low of just 20-30 animals in the 1930s. Illegal hunting and habitat loss are their primary threats.
