Geothermal Systems

In June 2008, the Toronto Zoo opened its first geothermal exhibit for the lion-tailed macaques! This exhibit uses the earth's energy to heat and cool itself throughout the year. Geothermal systems have the least environmental impacts of any space heating technology today and the Toronto Zoo aims to educate guests on the connection between human energy consumption with endangered wildlife such as the Lion-tailed macaques.

Since this system was installed, many animals have enjoyed the comforting heating and cooling effects. The Zoo’s clouded leopard cubs and peafowl enjoy the heat during the winter months; and the ring-tailed lemurs enjoy the cooling effects during their summer residence.
