ZOO RESIDENTS GET NAKED FOR YEAR OF THE RAT 2008

Who: African Naked Mole Rats.
What/Why: It’s the Year of the Rat and the Toronto Zoo has some of the most unusual and interesting rats of all. The African naked mole rat has the following features:
  • Has no fur
  • Is blind
  • Looks like a cigar with teeth
  • Lives completely underground in tunnels
  • Is ruled by a Queen who is bigger and bossier than the other rats
  • Lives in colonies that share some characteristics with bee and ant colonies
Come and check out our colony of these amazing rats via their clear Plexiglas tunnels. See them sleeping, eating, storing food, doing guard duty and caring for their colossal Queen.
Where: African Rainforest Pavilion
