Our Baby Zebra Has a New Name!

September 14th, 2006, Toronto, Ontario: Our female zebra baby, born on July 11th, 2006, after a 14 year hiatus in zebra births at the Zoo, deserves a very special name, and with your help we have found one! Our newest Zoo baby is called ZEBRINA. The meaning of the name is a twist on the popular girl's name Sabrina as well as meaning striped flower.

The contest to name this special baby, which ran from August 17th to September 10th inclusive, generated over 10,000 responses. Name suggestions were made to the Zoo's website and to Guest Services at the Zoo. A panel of judges composed of Zoo Animal Care staff and kids mulled over the names and selected ZEBRINA.

"Little Zebrina seems to like her new name and it fits her perfectly!" says Duncan Bourne, Supervisor, African Savannah.

A total of 19 Grevy's zebras have been born at the Toronto Zoo since 1977 with the last birth, prior to this one, taking place in 1992. Five of these animals are still here: Blue Jay, Keshia, Sudi, Punda, and new baby ZEBRINA.

You'll find our beautiful new baby zebra with her Mom and Dad in the Africa paddocks. Come by and help her get used to her new name! Bring your camera because ZEBRINA is beyond cute so you'll want to take lots of pics!
