Max Domi Named Torchbearer For
Pan Am Games Torch Relay at Toronto Zoo

TORONTO, ON (Monday, June 22, 2015)The Toronto Zoo is proud to announce that, Max Domi, will be the Pan Am Torchbearer to carry the flame when the torch relay visits the Toronto Zoo on Sunday, July 5th as part of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay.

The Toronto Zoo nominated Max to carry the flame as he not only embodies the core characteristics of the relay which are community, celebration, participation and pride, but he is also a sports hero to many younger Canadians,” said John Tracogna, Toronto Zoo’s Chief Executive Officer. “We are very proud of his accomplishments as one of the top junior hockey players in Canada and as a great ambassador for his sport. We look forward to hosting him at the Toronto Zoo,” he added.

“I was honoured to be chosen to carry the Pan Am flame at the Toronto Zoo as part of the Pan Am Games Torch Relay, said Max Domi. “Representing your country at a sporting event of this magnitude is an incredible accomplishment and I congratulate every athlete who will be participating in the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games.”

Canadians from coast to coast to coast watched anxiously as Team Canada won gold at the World Juniors Hockey Tournament in January, and as a result of his stellar performance as one of the top scorers, Max was named Best Forward of the tournament.

Max will carry the Pan Am flame from the Courtyard, (inside the Zoo’s main entrance), into the Waterside Theatre where he will be met by Mr. Tracogna, CEO of the Toronto Zoo, ‘Bob’ the sloth and some special animal ambassadors. ‘Bob’ was chosen as sloths are found in South America, where a number of Pan Am countries are located.

In celebration of the Pan Am Games Torch Relay, there will be a special children’s craft area on Sunday, July 5, 2015 starting at 9:30 a.m. in the Courtyard where visitors can make their own torch. The HMCS YORK Band, Toronto's Royal Canadian Naval Band, led by Lieutenant (Navy) Jack T'Mannetje, Director of Music will be also performing from 11:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The Pan Am flame is scheduled to arrive at the Toronto Zoo on Sunday, July 5, 2015 at approximately 1:15 p.m.

The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay, presented by President’s Choice and OLG, is supported by community partner CIBC and signature supporters Star Media Group and Metroland Media, Ontario Trillium Foundation, and Porter Airlines. The torch relay will invite Canadians to celebrate and share the Pan Am spirit throughout its 41-day journey towards Toronto, the host city of the Games.

Visitors are welcome to join us in celebrating this special event either at the front courtyard or at the Waterside Theatre, participation is FREE with zoo admission.
