Da Mao, Canada's only male adult giant panda, celebrated his eighth birthday today with much fan-fare and "cake". The Toronto Zoo's very artistic keeping team created a special themed enrichment item filled with some of his favourite treats! As part of the celebration our Fun Team was on hand, throughout the day, with some fun panda trivia and prizes.

NEW BABY ALERT!
TORONTO ZOO WELCOMES BIRTH OF
BACTRIAN CAMEL CALF

The Toronto Zoo would like to announce that Alice, a 20 year old female Bactrian camel, gave birth to a male calf in the Bactrian Camel Habitat.

Alice gave birth to her calf on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 after a 13 month gestation period, which is average for a Bactrian camel. When mom, Alice, was showing aggressive behaviour towards the baby, making feeding a challenge for the calf, Zoo Keepers stepped in to assist by bottle feeding the male calf with mother's milk to ensure he continues to be healthy and strong. Although the calf appears healthy and feeding well, the first thirty days will be critical. Staff will continue to closely monitor Alice and her calf during this time.

Alice and sire, Goober, are currently on exhibit in the Bactrian Camel Habitat, in the Eurasia Wilds area of the Zoo, while the calf remains off exhibit for the time being. However, you may catch a glimpse of the new camel calf while he is given access to the paddock for exercise. However, please note, the calf will not be on exhibit for a specific time period until further notice.
