Spring Toad Festival And Save the Frogs Day

Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3, 2015

10:00am to 4:00pm, Americas Wetlands

Celebrate the arrival of spring by experiencing the sights and sounds of amorous male toads in search of that special someone! Our annual wetland festival is scheduled around the frenzied breeding ritual of American toads at our very own Americas Wetlands Outdoor Exhibit. Although the emergence and courtship of toads is the main event, there are heaps of other fun activities for children and adults alike, including: face painting, froggy games like “Fish for a Prize,” Toady the Mascot, lessons on tracking wildlife using radio-telemetry, and information on how to become a Frog Watcher or Turtle Detective. It’s "toad-ally" fun for the whole family and FREE with admission!

Cute Alert!

Have you spotted our baby golden lion tamarins in the Americas Pavilion?

Born on March 6, 2015 to mom "Claire" and dad "Dolce", these two little orange babies camouflage quite well on mom and can be hard to spot! Keep your eyes peeled though, as both have begun venturing off and independently exploring the exhibit on their own.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) currently lists the golden lion tamarin as endangered. Tamarin populations have declined largely because of fragmentation, or total loss of habitat due to destruction of the rainforest for lumber, agriculture, pasturage, and settlement. They are still hunted and sold into the pet trade, even though such practices have been illegal for several decades.
