Successful Endangered African Penguin Breeding Program
Wraps Up 2012!
Friday, January 4, 2013: The Zoo proudly announces that a total of eight Endangered African Penguin Chicks joined the existing penguin colony in 2012. This is the Zoo's first full calendar year for the breeding program which produced two sets of hatchings; three in spring 2012 and five in December
Our recent hatchings come from the following four pairings:
"DJ" and Ziggy": one hatching December 10, 2012
"Pedro" and "Thandi": one hatching December 16, 2012
"Greenbird and Colby": two hatchings December 20 and 22, 2012
"Buddy" and "Farai": one hatching December 23, 2012
The penguin chicks will be on exhibit at their indoor enclosure, within the African Savanna,
starting mid-February as there is a fifth pair still sitting on two eggs due to hatch in mid-January. Please find attached photos for media use as this area is currently restricted.
