Frog-friendly backyard

Where to build your pond (cont.)

(c) Farm ponds

Ponds like those found on farms are usually 1.5 to 3 metres deep; deep enough to penetrate ground water to keep them filled all summer. They are exposed to full sunshine, are warm and productive. These ponds do not dry up so species such as green frogs live here. The tadpoles of green frogs require at least two years to develop into frogs. If you have green frogs then you can be sure that there is a permanent pond somewhere nearby.

To improve the area around the pond plant native species (see list) around the edge. This provides cover for adults and emerging amphibians.
