We presently have 250 volunteers, recruited from a wide variety of backgrounds. Volunteers do not handle plants and animals directly but are involved in the many diverse activities that make our Zoo so outstanding. And, because we are concerned with our changing environment, we involve our Volunteers in the exciting and rewarding task of educating Zoo visitors.
Year Round Volunteer Guides
- conduct tours through the Zoo site for school children and community groups
- present Outreach programs on a variety of topics to Toronto area schools, scouting organizations, clubs and groups wishing to learn more about the Zoo
- challenge the curiosity of visitors at Touch Tables displaying interesting Zoo biofacts in each of the pavilions
- give information to visitors at specific sites throughout the Zoo
- research and compile animal fact sheets and other educational material
- become involved in special events at the Zoo
- become Zoo members
- are not high school students
Year Roudn Volunteer Guides must complete a thirteen-week (one day a week) course beginning in the fall and are expected to make a commitment of two years, giving one day a week and at least 75 hours per year.
The deadline for our Year Round Volunteer Guide applications has now passed. To submit an application for the 2009/2010 training course, please complete the application form below and return it to the Zoo by Friday September 25, 2009. You will be contacted if you qualify for an interview after this date.

Summer Information Volunteers
Summer Information Volunteers have the interesting task of enhancing the day of all Zoo guests. They perform a variety of roles including:
- Providing information to Zoo guests at the front gate
- Challenging visitors' curiosity at interpretive stations throughout the Zoo site
- Interacting with young visitors at our Kids Zoo
Summer Information Volunteers must take a three-day training session in the spring and commit to one half day a week during the summer months, Volunteering at least 36 hours over the course of the summer. High school students are not eligible for this Volunteer opportunity.
The deadline for Summer Information Volunteer applications for the 2008 training course has now passed. To submit an application for the 2009 training course, please complete the application form below and return it to the Zoo by Friday March 20, 2009. You will be contacted if you qualify for an interview after this date.

Zoo Ambassador Student Volunteers
- Zoo Ambassadors are secondary and post-secondary students who lend a hand at special events throughout the year and at our Zoo Kids camp during the summer months.
Zoo Ambassadors are recruited once a year in the fall. Interviews are held in January and training takes place for selected candidates in the winter. They are expected to make a 2 year commitment, volunteering a minimum of 20 hours per year.
We are currently recruiting Zoo Ambassador Student Volunteers. To submit an application for the 2008/2009 school year, please complete the application form below and return it to the Zoo no later than January 2, 2009. Qualified applicants will be contacted for an interview after this date.
